MARCUS Tudgay’s agent says that Burnley are interested in the Sheffield Wednesday forward – but he was unable to confirm whether the Clarets have tabled a bid.

Weekend reports suggested that Burnley have offered around £1.5m for Tudgay as well as £2.75m for promising Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher as they bid to bolster their squad for their first season in the Premier League.

The club have not made any response to the reports but Tudgay’s agent, his now retired former Derby County team-mate Darryl Powell, has confirmed that the Clarets do have some interest in the 26-year-old.

Tudgay proved to be Burnley’s nemesis last season, impressively scoring four goals in two games as Sheffield Wednesday did the double over Owen Coyle’s men.

He was named the PFA fans’ player of the year for the Championship and is soon to sign a new three-year contract at Hillsborough, although Powell has suggested that the opportunity to play in the Premier League would be difficult to turn down.

He said: “I spoke to Burnley a good month ago now about a few players and they did say that they liked Marcus. He is a player they admire.

“As for whether a bid has gone in for £1.5m, I would have to clarify that myself with Burnley on Monday.

“Marcus is due to sign a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday next week but I would have thought that if Burnley were interested then he would be interested because obviously they’re in the Premier League, which is where every player wants to be.

“He’s a decent player and he can do a good job as both an out-and-out centre forward and on the right side.

“He played quite a bit on the right for Sheffield Wednesday last season.”
