BURNLEY skipper Steve Brunt is looking to claim the bragging rights over cross-town rivals Lowerhouse this weekend - but is more concerned about keeping the title dream alive.
In one of the tightest Lancashire League seasons in decades, eight teams are in real contention as the campaign appraoches the half-way stage.
And ahead of two derby clashes this weekend, Brunt believes his men can kick on.
“We were very disappointed to lose to Accrington last weekend,” said Brunt, who has taken over from pro Jeeva Kulatunga, pictured, as skipper.
“We could have actually have gone top had we won and there are seven or eight teams right in the race.
“Obviously this weekend is about local pride. You never want to lose in the derbies. But more importanly, there are 24 points up for grabs.
“Overall we are playing some good cricket as are Lowerhouse and they should be two good games in front of two good crowds if the weather stays fine.”
Lowerhouse start the weekend just two places and seven points ahead of their rivals despite having to rely on sub pros for the entire season to date.
One team who finally have a pro is Todmorden and Sri Lankan Chintha Jayasinghe debuts in the double header against East Lancs.
The league’s top two meet in double derby action as Accrington face Enfield, while Nelson and Colne lock horns.
Haslingden and Rawtenstall renew their rivalries, as do Church and Rishton. And Ramsbottom hope to take their Worsley Cup form into the league as they face two dates with Bacup.
