WADE Elliott has called on Burnley fans to light the bluetouch paper at Turf Moor tonight – and recreate the passion of their recent cup classic with fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers.
The Clarets winger insists his side will give it “our best shot” at perfecting a famous Carling Cup giant-killing against Arsene Wenger’s much-heralded Gunners youngsters.
It is the second time the two sides have met this year, with Arsenal’s more senior stars getting the upper hand in an FA Cup third round tie back in January.
On that occasion, a crowd of less than 17,000 roared Burnley on, but to no avail as goals from Eduardo and Nicklas Bendtner secured safe passage for the Londoners.
However, a thunderous full-house of almost 22,000 is guaranteed at Turf this evening as Owen Coyle’s men look to make it three successive Premier League scalps, following victory over Fulham and their shock penalty shoot-out success at Chelsea.
The last time Burnley enjoyed a capacity crowd was for their famous FA Cup battle with Rovers in February 2005.
Although that scrappy fifth round tie ended 0-0 on the day, the atmosphere went down as one of the most fearsome in recent history at Turf.
Brian Jensen and Michael Duff are the only Clarets survivors from that match and, now, Elliott wants supporters to crank up the volume all over again.
“It was a great atmosphere when Arsenal came here in the FA Cup last season,” said the flying winger.
“We’ve got a real old-style ground here and it’s a fantastic atmosphere whem it’s nearly full and the fans make some noise.
“But I’ve never really seen the ground full as yet.
“I joined Burnley after the season we played Blackburn and some of the lads have told me how noisy it was and that it was the best atmosphere they’ve ever heard.
“They said they couldn’t even hear the team-talk before the game, it was that loud.
“It would be great if we could have an atmosphere like that again. It’s going to be a special night, I’m sure, and we’re all looking forward to it.”
Elliott added: “It’s a great game for the club, especially for those 6,500 fans that came down to Chelsea. That was an amazing night.
“It’s nice for those supporters that we have got another great club coming to Burnley.”
After twice revelling in their giant-killing status, the Clarets will hope to make it three Carling Cup wins out of three against London’s leading clubs.
But Elliott insists the challenge does not get any easier against a thrilling young Arsenal outfit that thrashed Sheffield United 6-0 earlier in the competition, before handing out a 3-0 defeat to Wigan in the last 16.
Wenger is again intent on fielding his up-and-coming aces – including former Claret loanee Mark Randall – and Elliott admits they will prove an almighty handful.
The 29-year-old said: “I think all the lads are aware of how difficult the task is.
“We’ve seen the young Arsenal players and they are a frightening side. We know we are going to be right up against it.
“But I’ve not had the chance to play in many quarter-finals in a big competition like this.
“We’ll give it our best shot to get through to the semi-finals.”
