BURNLEY FC legend Jimmy McIlroy is set to be handed the freedom of the town.
Burnley Council will next month be asked to agree to make the former Clarets and Northern Ireland star, 77, an honorary freeman.
If councillors agree as expected, McIlroy, who made more than 400 appearances for Burnley in 12 years, will be handed a commemorative medal, a framed certificate and the highest honour the borough can bestow.
Council leader Gordon Birtwistle said: “Jimmy was an inspiration to a generation of Clarets fans and I’m absolutely delighted his contribution to the local community is being recognised.
“Although he was born in Northern Ireland, Jimmy took Burnley to his heart and it repaid the compliment.
“He is adored by fans of a certain age and just speaking his name conjures up memories of a golden age when Burnley FC was in its heyday.
“I’m extremely happy the council has agreed to honour Jimmy by granting him the Freedom of the Borough. He absolutely deserves it.”
Clarets chairman Barry Kilby added: “This is a richly deserved honour and one that we fully support. Jimmy stands alongside Lancashire greats such as Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney as a real club ambassador. I cannot think of anyone more worthy.”
Once councillors have agreed the motion, McIlroy will be granted the freedom of Burnley at a ceremony at Burnley Town Hall on December 9.
