Bacup had the majority of the play in their Vodkat Premier Division defeat at Atherton Colleries, despite playing 65 minutes with 10 men.
Captain Davey Luker was playing his first game following a three-match ban for a previous straight red card but lasted 25 minutes before being sent off again.
Atherton’s Ryan Sutcliffe was goalbound and, although Luker came to the rescue with what looked like a well-timed challenge, the referee did not see it that way.
He awarded Atherton a penalty and surprisingly a straight red card for the Bacup skipper.
This came after Bacup had taken a 22nd-minute lead as Matthew Cross played a quality ball deep into the area and Ryan Giggs’ brother Rhodri cleverly headed the ball home.
Atherton equalised with the penalty that followed Luker’s red card but Bacup regained the lead when Giggs flicked on Sean Roscoe’s corner and Steve Sheils forced the ball over the line.
That lead lasted until the 70th minute, when Bacup lost possession and Troy Hayder found the net from 30 yards.
Atherton then went ahead with six minutes left as Hoyland smashed home another stunning goal.
Bacup levelled in the final minute as Jamie Rother’s defence-splitting pass allowed Giggs to round the keeper and score.
But seconds later the home side secured victory as Sutcliffe scored at the far post.
