PAUL Ince believes Matt Derbyshire’s disallowed goal was a second half turning point – and insists referee Mark Halsey got the ‘big decision’ wrong.

Having scored with his first touch, substitute Derbyshire thought he had edged Rovers ahead by lashing home from close range, but Halsey penalised Andre Ooijer for a push on David James.

Replays suggest the decision was harsh and, minutes later, Sean Davis scored the crucial goal to win the game for Portsmouth.

Ince said: “It was a poor decision from the referee. He gave a foul on Jamo and he has not touched him it should have been 3-2.

“These things happen when you are down there. A few weeks ago Vidic abuses my keeper and a goal is given.

“Today no one touches Jamo and he blows the whistle. What can you do? We win the game if Matt's goal is allowed.

“He does well when he comes on. One thing Matty has is pace and we don't have that in anyone else. He will get in behind people and is a finisher.”

While the Rovers boss believes that decision was a major influence, he also admitted poor defending is a big concern.

Having dominated for the majority, Ince knows things have to change, blaming the defeat on his own players’ lack of concentration.

He said: “We are frustrated and disappointed. In the first half we were by far the better side. We had two great chances, one from Stevie Warnock and one from Roque.

“I know Crouch could have scored in the last minute of the first half and I made the lads aware of that. Crouch can do that when he pulls off at the far post and I told them that at the interval.

“Then low and behold he does the same thing and he scores. We lost our shape after that and maybe because we were playing so well we thought we had to get the goal back straight away.

“We lost our shape and we are 2-1 down. Once the second goal goes in from Tugay, who was immense and the best player on the park, there is only team that is going to win it.

“It is a lack of concentration. In this league you have to concentrate for 95 minutes.”

While Sean Davis was allowed the freedom of the park to slot home the winner, Ince insists the move should have been stopped before that.

He said: “Their winner should have been avoided. Diop ran past three of our players. I am not being cynical but in Italy he would have been brought down and took a yellow card.

“But he ghosts past our players and we are 3-2 down. It was undeserved but I sit here every week and keep saying it.

“We have to keep the back door shut, not just the defence but everyone and for the whole game.

“They never looked dangerous really in the first half. We went in feeling comfortable and confident but before you know it you are two goals down and you can't understand why.

“My players’ heads will never go down. The goals spurred us on.

"It is a strange league. Today and last week we should have got something from the game.”
