A RARE match day programme salvaged from the Royal Box following the Clarets’ finest hour – to date – has fetched £4,600 at auction.
The 1914 FA Cup final souvenir, when Burnley beat Liverpool 1-0 at Crystal Palace, is one of the finest examples of club memorabilia.
Issued to King George V’s royal party, in the days before cup finals were held beneath the Twin Towers at Wembley, the programme has indigo blue leather covers, the royal coat of arms, and a cord and tassle along the spine.
History was made as King George was the first reigning monarch to attend an FA Cup final in the event’s 43-year history.
The programme was estimated to fetch between £3,000 and £4,000, at the Graham Budd auction in London, but was snapped up by a mystery bidder for £4,600.
Bidding was less than that achieved for another 1914 cup final programme, which went under the hammer last autumn, fetching £6,000.
