CHELSEA striker Didier Drogba has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after throwing a coin at Burnley fans during the Clarets' Carling Cup fourth-round triumph at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

The Ivorian quickly apologised for his actions but the FA and the Metropolitan Police confirmed yesterday they were investigating the incident.

The FA have also written to the Clarets to request information on missiles thrown at Chelsea players from the Burnley section at Stamford Bridge.

A statement on the FA website read: "Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been charged with violent conduct.

"Drogba is alleged to have thrown a missile into the away section of the crowd after scoring during the League Cup match at Stamford Bridge."

Burnley manager Owen Coyle has insisted the club will take action against any supporters who threw coins at Drogba.

“Burnley will deal with it because one thing with the football club is we will not condone any anti-social behaviour,” said Coyle.

“It is a shame and that is one of the things that happens in football now, “We don't talk about the football when we should be talking about the quality of players on show week-in, week-out in the Premier League and the Championship. That is what we should be talking about.

“There was obviously an incident, I haven't seen it, but I have obviously seen the TV stuff and I think that takes away from the game.

“Hopefully it does not get blown out of proportion, but it certainly did happen."

Coyle added: “I think if I am going to play devil's advocate, first of all I would never condone any supporter hurling abuse or anything else at any player or manager.

" I think it is all too easy to be abusive towards anybody involved and that is totally wrong.”
