TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known East Lancashire football administrator who has died after a battle with cancer.

Phil Terry was secretary at Accrington Stanley until 2006 and also held that post at Colne Dynamoes.

A minute’s silence was held before Stanley’s FA Cup clash against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday which finished 0-0.

Mr Terry died on Friday.

Stanley chairman Eric Whalley said Mr Terry, who was 68 when he called it a day at the Reds after 14 years, would be sorely missed by all.

The retired factory worker lived in Colne with his wife Sheila.

When he retired he said he was looking forward to spending more time on his hobby of researching his family history, but he remained a regular fixture at matches.

Mr Whalley said: “It is very sad. He left a legacy with the club.

“He will be sorely missed at the football club but will be remembered.”

Paul Fletcher, chief executive of Burnley Football Club, worked with Mr Terry for 12 months when he was the commercial manager of Colne Dynamoes.

He said: “He had a great love of football. It was his life. He enjoyed the admin side of it and he was a pleasure to work with.

“It is the Phil Terrys of this world that make football what it is today.”

The minute’s silence was also for both Stanley season ticket holder Brian Pilkington who died last week and Remembrance Day.
