BACUP Borough striker Tommy Turner says he is targeting personal and team glory this season.

The Vodkat League’s top scorer, with 15 goals to his name so far this campaign, is hoping to add to his tally against Wigan Robin Park in the League Cup tomorrow.

And while Turner wants to win a trophy with Borough, he has also set his sights on the league’s and the Lancashire Telegraph’s Golden Boot awards.

After failing to hit the net in Borough’s first three games, Turner exploded into life with a hat-trick in the league game against Atherton Collieries in August.

But his season was almost cut short with a broken cheekbone picked up against Alsager Town.

Now, thanks to some outrageous protective gear and an operation, Turner has played through the pain and has scored in Bacup’s last six games.

And the former Salford City striker is confident Brent Peters’ side can be a force this term.

He said: “I think, for the team, we have to target a piece of silverware.

“If we can win a competition, that would be a fantastic achievement for us.

“I think we are a good enough team but we just have to be more consistent.

“After going out of the FA Vase and FA Cup, the manager has put more emphasis on the League Cup.

“I haven’t won a trophy since I was part of the Charlestown side that won the County Cup in the Eccles Sunday League three years ago, so I’d love to win something personally.”

He added: “At Salford last season, I did well but I was in and out of the side all season.

“As soon as I made a mistake, I heard all about it straight away. But with Brent (Peters), he just lets me get on with it and I can let my boots do the talking.

“He’s taken the pressure of me, given me the run of games that I needed and the goals have started to flow.

“I’m aiming to finish as the league’s highest scorer. I got 24 last season and I’m hoping for 30 in the league this year.”

After two seasons ravaged by injury, Borough have had a decent start to the campaign and lie 10th in the Premier Division.

And Turner is urging Bacup to keep to their footballing sensibilities as they look to climb even higher.

He added: “The boys have not been together that long but we’ve bonded really quickly.

“They’re creating the chances and I’m sticking them away. But a few of the other lads are scoring well so we’re doing okay.

“We haven’t played any of the top sides yet so that will be a real test.

“But the management team have watched New Mills and AFC Fylde and said that we’re easily as good as them when we get the ball down and play.

“It’s not always easy with some of the pitches in the league, especially at this time of year.

“But if we can beat them, then we’ll be right up there and anything can happen.”
