ACCRINGTON Cricket Club skipper David Ormerod has completed a fantastic year by being named as the Wisden Cricketer magazine club cricketer of the Year.
Ormerod, 39, led the Thorneyholme Road side to the Lancashire League and Worsley Cup double and also took his 1000th wicket when he dismissed Bacup’s Mark Clayton in July.
He also won the league bowling prize for the eighth time, which he will share this year with Rawtenstall’s Keith Roscoe.
Ormerod said: “I got a call from Andrew Collomosse, who works for the magazine, and he told me I’d won the prize. I was totally shocked.
“It’s difficult to take the award for myself because everyone at the club deserves credit for what we’ve achieved.
“It’s a very proud moment for me, and it’s something I will remember for the rest of my life. But it’s also an honour for the Lancashire League, which has a very proud tradition.”
Edward Craig, deputy editor of Wisden Cricketer magazine, said: “It was a tight selection this year. He was up against some heavy-scoring batsman but because of David’s all-round achievements, we just couldn’t ignore him.”
Ormerod will be formally announced in the December issue of the Wisden Cricketer magazine.
