COLNE were edged out in a seven-goal thriller against promotion-chasing Glossop North End in the Vodkat League Premier Division.
Glossop went ahead through Darren Hamilton in the third minute but Michael Cruz levelled for Colne in the 42nd minute.
Rick Bailey’s strike eight minutes after half time put the hosts back in front, though, and Martin Parker then gave them a two-goal cushion three minutes later.
Cruz reduced the deficit with a 73rd-minute strike for Colne but Whelan’s goal put Glossop 4-2 up.
Andy Tinker gave the visitors hope by making it 4-3 with two minutes remaining but Glossop held on for victory.
Colne now sit 16th in the Premier Division.
