ACCRINGTON Stanley have not yet ruled Phil Edwards out of Saturday’s home match against Wycombe - even though he required eight stitches on Tuesday in a horror injury that has left the club calling for a ban on the use of blades on football boots.

Edwards was stretchered off in agony just 17 minutes into the 2-1 win against Shrewsbury but the Reds will wait to assess whether he and possible replacement right back Peter Cavanagh (Achilles) will be fit to face Wycombe.

Goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin was ruled out for several weeks after sustaining a similar injury last month and assistant boss Jimmy Bell said: “Phil has got an horrific gash behind his knee.

“I’ve looked at the video and it was an accident but again it’s because of the blades.

“Something needs to be done about them because we had this with Ian Dunbavin. They’re very dangerous.”
