BLACKBURN Hawks made it six straight league losses after another weekend to forget in the English National Ice Hockey League.

The town team suffered a 5-3 defeat away to Kingston Jets, before scoring a goal less on an equally disappointing day at home to Billingham Bombers.

Hawks have now gone five weeks without a victory in North Division 1, following their opening day success against the Jets in mid-September.

Eager to do the double over the Hull side, Hawks started on the offensive, but in truth, things failed to go to plan from the first face-off to the final whistle.

Kingston surprised net-minder Adam Baxendale for the opener when they found a gap between his foot and the post.

Play had barely resumed when Kingston found bags of space to fire home number two.

Despite the disappointing start, Hawks continued to attack and were duly rewarded when Aaron Davies and Tim McKay cut through the Kingston defence and effortlessly fired the puck past Karl Holmes.

Kingston gained another powerplay and bagged their third with too many men on the ice. Chris Arnone's loud protests saw him evicted from the game and a howler from Baxendale gifted Kingston their fourth of the night in front of an empty goal.

Carl Slater cut straight through the Kingston defence and finished off with a clean shot into the top corner.

But Hawks hopes were promptly dashed when Craig Elliott restored the Jets' three-goal lead and Michael Brunton's strike proved too little too late.

Twenty-four hours later, the Hawks were ruing their luck once more.

After a goalless opening period, the Bombers opened the scoring courtesy of a five on three, before David Meikle found himself free in front of the net for 1-1.

But a crazy couple of minutes effectively decided the game in Billingham's favour. Three defensive errors were all punished by the visitors, who went 4-1 up heading into the final 20 minutes.

Both sides found the back of the net in the final third, with Tim McKay bagging the goal of the game, but general manager Andy Slater was again left scratching his head.

“We do have issues re the netminder, but we can only go with what we've got,” he said.

“We are in negotiations with someone at present and hope to make an announcement by the end of the week.

“I don't like putting all the onus on the goalie, but we have let in a couple of soft goals and as a result, the lads’ heads go down or they try to do too much instead of concentrating on the basics. We'll get something sorted.”
