IF you hadn't seen England's 3-1 win in Minsk on Wednesday night, a quick glance at the national papers would lead you to believe that Fabio Capello's men had won the World Cup - never mind won four games.

The back pages are full of poxy puns on Wayne Rooney's name - "BELAROOS" features on more than one.

But what actually have England done? Won four game against mainly second-rate opposition.

With the exception of the victory in Croatia, beating Andorra, Kazahkstan and Belarus are hardly phenomenal achievements for a group of players who have won most of the trophies open to them and are earning mega-bucks.

From the chumps the same group of players were under Steve McClaren, suddenly England are champions and can do no wrong.

Sure, it's great that England are unbeaten - their best start to a World Cup qualifying campaign apparently - but they've achieved nothing yet.

There's a long way to go before we can even dream about going to South Africa.

But page upon page is dedicated to England's win over Belarus (who were missing their best player let's not forget.) It's classic national press hype.

What's missing is a sense of perspective.

It's like watching a cricket match and one side bats until lunch scoring 150-0 and all the papers come out raving about what a great team they are.

Then, after lunch, they get shot out for 160.

We're merely doing well in the qualification process, that's all.

Dream about glory if you like - but I'll wait until 2010 if you don't mind.
