KAREAM Dawoud scored a second half winner as Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School came from behind to beat Eton College 2-1 in the second round of the Boodles ISFA Cup.

QEGS conceded an early goal against a compact and competitive Eton side, who continued to make the better chances. And had it not been for three good saves from keeper Jordan Clarke, QEGS could have trailed by more at the break.

James Gooder had the best of QEGS’ first half chances but had two close range shots blocked.

Torrential rain from the start of the second period meant that mistakes were inevitable, but with Alex Brees and Adam Whiteside starting to take control of the midfield, QEGS began to dominate. The equaliser finally came after the intervention of the assistant referee, who spotted some shirt-pulling in the Eton penalty area and Whiteside gratefully crashed home the spot-kick.

Eton could make little headway and QEGS, three times winners of this competition, started to make chances. Full-back Jack Morris had a shot deflected narrowly wide and the visitors’ defending became more desperate. From a left-wing corner the Eton keeper, under pressure from Jack Mellor, failed to hold the ball and Dawoud touched home at the far post for what proved to be the winning goal.

After that, QEGS went near on several occasions and Joe MacDonald missed a great opportunity when he steered wide with only the keeper to beat. Eton’s gritty performance was soured just before the end when they had two players dismissed.

QEGS have another home tie in the last 16 against Forest School from Snaresbrook, East London which will be played in November.

QEGS: Clarke, Morris, Dawoud, Mellor, Bromley, Gooder, Whiteside, Brees, MacDonald, Lewis, Turnock.
