IT has been a case of out with the old and in with the new at Burnley Belverdere this season.

Fresh-faced youngsters have been drafted in from the junior ranks as the club builds for the future.

And keeper Liam Broxup will be hoping that the future doesn’t include the howler that ultimately gifted Ossie victory.

Broxup went on to make a string of fine saves but, by then, the damage was done.

A goal didn’t appear to be on the cards when Phil Howard worked himself a bit of space on the right to drill a shot goalwards.

It didn’t seem to have the power to trouble Broxup but the keeper somehow let the ball slip through his grasp.

It was one of those one-off errors – or that’s what the keeper thought.

For after denying Chris Porter and Adam Sand-erson with two excellent close range saves, Broxup let Oliver Clare’s tame header squirm through his hands and over the line – but this time the referee did not spot it.

The fact that it was the error that separated the teams was down to Ossie failing to make the most of their first half advantage and a wonderful fightback by Belvedere after the break.

For as well as the two good saves, Porter nodded over when well placed and Clare hit the post with another header.

In reply, John Hynes and Stacy Slater both went close with speculative long range efforts.

It was a different story as Belvedere played down the slope after the break.

Left back Adam White-head upped the tempo with two surging runs to the byline.

But Belvedere were indebted to him for keeping the score at 1-0 when he hooked Stephen Lonsdale’s flick header off the line.

It was a rare foray upfield for the Saints in the second half.

The fact that Clare, Ossie’s outstanding attacking thre-at in the first half, was now equally as effective as their first line of defence, sum-med up the shift in power.

For Belvedere, Tom Cole and Jordan Cookson drilled in well struck shots while the elusive Hynes, playing in the whole between attack and midfield, was becoming increasingly influential.

And it was his clever flicked header inside that forced Matt Marcroft to hack Martyn Hillier’s header off his own line.

Kieran Hargreaves in the Ossie goal was then lucky to get away with a rush of blood when Whitehead chipped the stranded keeper only to hit the post.

The relieved Hargreaves turned and scooped up the loose ball – unfortunately for Broxup, he was not as lucky when it came to getting away with his own error of judgement.
