TWO penalties in extra time sent Nelson out of the Vodkat League Cup at the first-round stage.

The Blues got off to a flying start when Chris Clarkson headed them in front from Chris Ogundoye’s cross after two minutes.

But they conceded a soft equaliser nine minutes later when Will Ryder scored from a quickly-taken free kick and the score remained at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Martin Payne restored Nelson’s lead in the first minute of extra time when he cut inside and found the top corner with a spectacular left-foot shot.

But in the second half of extra time Payne tangled legs with Ryder, who got up to score from the spot.

And just three minutes later Craig Redhead conceded another penalty and Ryder completed his hat-trick for Ashton.
