IT was sweet revenge for Colne after last week’s bitter disappointment at being dumped out of the FA Vase by the same opposition.
Both teams had narrow escapes with goal-line clearances in the first five minutes of the Vodkat League Premier Division encounter.
Colne were the first to come close to conceding when Martin Broderick cleared Adie Nevins header from a corner off the line. Then minutes later John Maloney repeated the scene at the other end from a James Crorken effort.
Crorken and Andy Tinker then combined well to set up Jamie Longley, who brought out a quality save from Andy Ralph.
In the second half Colne continued to dominate and it was not long before they took a deserved lead when Broderick reacted quickly to a loose clearance by Abbey and his long-range effort deflected to Longley, who squared the ball for Crorken to blast home.
With minutes remaining Liam Garbutt raced past the Abbey defence but was cynically brought down from behind by Aaron Edwards, who was immediately sent off.
