BLACKBURN Rovers were undone by two goals at either end of the game as they suffered their first league defeat of the season.

And, before collapsing in injury time, Paul Ince's men will feel they could have secured at least a point having missed a penalty and seeing a goal ruled out for a marginal off side decision.

Rovers faced an uphill battle after goals from Callum Davenport on 12 minutes and a Christopher Samba own goal on 20.

Two minutes later Jason Roberts turned Davenport neatly on the edge of the area and poked the ball into the far corner to get Rovers back in the game.

Shortly after there was a major blow as Roque Santa Cruz limped off injured to be replaced by Matt Derbyshire.

Rovers toiled for a breakthrough and Roberts was a constant danger as he strongly held up play as Rovers played through the front man.

They thought their moment had come as Derbyshire tapped home from close range but the linesman's flag ruled the goal out.

Vince Grella, making his debut was booked and then replaced at half time by another new signing Keith Andrews.

Rovers came out pumped up for the second half and they won a free kick on the edge of the area. Carlton Cole, in the wall, jumped to sheild Morten Gamst Pedersen's free kick, but he put his hands up.

The referee gave a penalty. But Roberts tamely side-footed the ball to Robert Green's left and the keeper was able to make the save.

Rovers pressed for an equaliser and Derbyshire came closest as he ran through on the keeper but side-footed his shot over Green and the bar.

Paul Robinson made two outstanding saves in the space of one minute from Bellamy and Cole to keep Rovers in the game.

After five minutes of injury time were announced, Rovers pushed up desperate for an equaliser.

And they were caught on the break by former Rover Craig Bellamy's pace.

Clean through the substitute smashed the ball home impressively to make it three one.

Shortly after Carlton Cole - with one of the last kicks of the game - scored a fourth from close range as Rovers' defence fell to pieces.
