THERE can’t be many players who clock up more miles than those competing in the Inter Town Team Summer Snooker League.
From Padiham to Earby and Colne to Skipton, teams are literally driven to get a game of snooker.
The league, which is now in its third season, also has teams from Nelson, Brierfield and Barnoldswick who are happy to motor to their next game.
It is that desire to play summer snooker that has been the driving force behind the league which has grown year on years since it was launched in 2006.
“I suppose our teams are spread out across a wide area but it has worked out very well,” said league chairman Mark Salmon. “Up until a few years ago, there was no summer snooker league in this area. Teams were playing in winter leagues then scratching around for something to do in the summer.”
The league formed with five teams three years ago which rose to eight last year.
Now in its third season, the league can boast 10 teams.
“We would probably struggle with more teams that that because of all the travelling,” added Salmon who plays for Barnoldswick.
So it is case of quality rather than quantity in a league that operates a handicap system.
Barnoldswick Union B are the team to beat have been crowned champions in the opening two seasons.
“The standard is pretty high and there are some quality players,” added Salmon. “The likes of Paul Rinaldi, Dwain Cash and Joe Nolan all play in the league.”
l The Skipton Snooker League’s AGM will be held at Skipton WMC on August 3.
