John Eustace hopes Blackburn Rovers will be active in the January transfer window with quality in the final third a priority.

The Rovers head coach has spoken about the need for more goal-scorers in the squad after losing Sam Szmodics. Rovers have done a good job at spreading the responsibility around but have been guilty of being wasteful in front of goal.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that a striker and a wide player are top of the New Year shopping list and Eustace confirmed he'd like to add quality in that position.

Yuki Ohashi has been a great pick-up but hasn't scored since mid-September. Makhtar Gueye, by contrast, is still looking for his first Championship striker.

There are other areas that the head coach wants to strengthen too but it's about identifying and signing the right players at the top end of the pitch.

"I hope we can be active," Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph.

"It is about building and we want to add quality to the group. They have to be the right players, of course they do.

"That's the job of the recruitment team now and I hope we can get in the right players. We need quality in the final third and we have spoken about it.

"We have shown that against Cardiff and other games but we've had good chances and not be clinical enough. Quality in the final third would certainly help and bring competition to the other places.

"There are a couple of other positions but we have a good squad of players. We need quality to come in but this group is still ready if not."

John Park left the club this week, leaving the Head of Recruitment position vacant. Rovers have now advertised for a Chief Football Scout to replace him, highlighting a shift in structure once again.

Park had previously been a very central figure, working with Tony Mowbray on recruitment. But now with Rudy Gestede leading the transfer team as Head of Football Operations, Park's influence had been lessened.

Eustace did not reveal much of his exit, which is understandable given his title of head coach.

He admitted that losing his experience will be a loss to the football club and they enjoyed a good work relationship.

"John is a very experienced guy and excellent at what he does," he explained.

"He will be a big miss to the club but that's out of my hands. He did a great job up to now but he put in a lot of hard work and effort.

"It's between the club and John as to why he's left. The work he did whilst I've been here has been great, he clearly knows his players and he's a very experienced guy.

"My working relationship with him was very good. He was a really nice guy and I got on well with him.

"The recruitment has been good, we were short of numbers until the last few weeks so players needed time to get up to speed. But they have all played their part.

"It was a group effort and everyone on that side worked together. John has moved on and it will be a loss but we'll move on as well.

"The club still have Rudy (Gestede) and Adam (Owen) and they will sort it out. They played a big part in the summer so that will carry on."
