Former Rovers goalkeeper Tim Flowers has been appointed the new manager at non-league side Alvechurch.

Flowers was previously in charge of Redditch United but they confirmed several days ago that he had decided to step down from his position “following an approach from another club”.

The 57-year-old guided Redditch to third in the Southern League Premier Division Central but opted to move to Alvechurch, who sit 18th in the same division.

He is set to take charge of his first match in the new role against Bedford Town on Saturday afternoon.

A club statement said: "We would like to thank Redditch for the way in which they dealt with our approach.”

Flowers began his playing career at Wolves and had stints at Southampton and Swindon before heading to Ewood Park in 1993.

He went on to become a key figure in East Lancashire, racking up more than 200 appearances over a six-year spell.

The shot stopper was part of the squad that won the Premier League title under Kenny Dalglish in 1995, playing alongside the likes of Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton and Colin Hendry.

After leaving Rovers, Flowers went on to play for Leicester, Stockport and Coventry. He also represented England on the international stage, winning 11 caps and earning selection for the 1998 World Cup.

The 57-year-old later held coaching roles at Manchester City, Coventry and Hull among others.

He also had a spell in charge at Solihull Moors, finishing second in the National League and narrowly missing out on promotion to the Football League.
