John Eustace was been delighted with the adaptability of Blackburn Rovers after they carried out their game plan to beat Cardiff City.
The head coach watched his side demonstrate both sides of their game to leave the Welsh capital with three points. That ensured their first away win of the Championship season at the seventh attempt.
Rovers played some brilliant football, which saw them score two beautifully-crafted goals. The first was a flowing, 41-pass move working the ball from defence and into the opposition’s net.
But the team also weather a real storm once Cardiff got back to 2-1 from the penalty spot. They had to ensure 10 minutes of serious bombardment in their penalty area before Lewis Baker scored on the counter-attack to win the game.

Eustace was really pleased with his side impressing in both aspects of the game. Real hallmarks for any Championship team if they’re to win on the road.
“That was a proper Championship game. First half was excellent, the second half required us to dig in deep and defend the box for our lives which we did,” Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph.
“We knew we’d then get opportunities on the break and we did. It was an all-round Championship performance.
“I think to win any games in this league, you have to be adaptable. Play football when you can, defend your box when you can and transition. There are lots of areas to be good at.
“We do a lot of work on our defensive side lots of work with the ball and in transition. You have to be adaptable in the Championship and not too predictable.
“It’s good to get that monkey off our backs with the away win. That was good. It’s just important to believe in what you’re doing and the performances overall have been very good, I feel. We haven’t always had the results but today we had an excellent performance and results.”
Rovers have been persistent with their preference to play out from the back, particularly at home. It has varied more away from Ewood Park but Eustace revealed that has been a tactic depending on the opposition.
But at Cardiff, Rovers felt they could utilise the bigger pitch and play through the Bluebirds’ press. That turned out to be exactly the right move.
“If you get the opportunity, you can do it. We came here and felt we could do that. It’s a big pitch out there and we wanted to make the most out of that,” he conceded.
“It’s about being patient and believing in what you’re doing. We are trying to build something special at the club but it’ll take time. Moments like today, that first goal is what it’s all about.
“Even if we’d have lost today, we want to win games, but the performances and togetherness in the dressing room is there for everyone to see. I think it’s important when we come back that we’ll have bodies on the bench.
“The players injured at the moment will come back in and suspensions. The bench was very small today. This is a fantastic squad to work with and whoever is on the pitch will be 100 per cent committed.”
