John Eustace was delighted with Blackburn Rovers' performance at Cardiff City as they secured a first away win in the Championship.

Rovers ended their goal drought in some style with three fantastic goals, the first of which was a move with 40-plus passes before Andi Weimann tapped in Lewis Travis’ cross.

The second owed to the captain too. A defence-splitting pass for Harry Pickering to this time do the honours and give Weimann an easy finish.

Eustace was delighted with the quality of football that Rovers displayed at times and how they rolled their sleeves up under late pressure. The head coach felt this was a reward for what have been good performances but this time they had a clinical edge to finish their chances.

“I thought we were excellent, we dominated the game in the first half with great possession football,” Eustace said.

“We scored a fantastic goal in the first half with 40-odd passes. Then we came in at the break and we knew they’d put some pressure on but we scored the second at the right time.

“I thought we gave a soft penalty away and I have no complaints about it. It gave them a lifeline but the character the boys showed to get the third was excellent.

“The way the back four defended the box with the crosses they put in after their goal was fantastic. We don’t have a big squad and it’s about using it and the subs that came on made an impact.

“Everyone who comes on is very competitive and ready to fight and scrap. The players we brought on made a difference and got us through it.

“They see what we do every day and the performances have been very good. One disappointing performance at Coventry where we let ourselves down, out of 15. Maybe the first 60 minutes at Plymouth as well and second half against Sheffield United.

“We have been very good and competitive but haven’t got the results we’ve deserved. Today we were clinical, we weren’t on Wednesday and we lost. It’s all about defending your box and taking your chances at the other end.”

The first goal is one that will be replayed over and over by Rovers fans making their way back to Lancashire. It was a move of sublime quality, showing the advantages of being patient when playing out from the back.

“The goal was pure quality, the football to get to the goal was outstanding,” Eustace added on the build-up for Weimann’s first.

“We do a lot of work on that on the training field but you also have to be adaptable against who you’re playing. We felt we could come here today and play in certain areas and certain times after studying them and that came off.

“You can’t play that type of football in every game. The Championship is relentless, whoever you come up against have different tactics and different ideas. It was pleasing to score the first goal like we did but even better to get the second and third after a turnover on transition.”
