Blackburn Rovers were left to rue missed chances as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Watford.
John Eustace's side are still waiting for their first win away from home in the Championship. They've now lost their last three away from Ewood Park.
This was a typically tight Championship game defined by the small margins. Rovers missed two huge opportunities and Watford converted theirs from the penalty spot.
Dom Hyam somehow hit the crossbar and post from six yards with a venomous strike. Hawkeye images showed the ball was 90% over the line but somehow stayed out.
Kwadwo Baah had Watford's best chance but mistimed his finish at the back post. That was a let-off as the Hornets grew into the match following Rovers' fast start.
But there was nothing really between the two teams and two second-half moments decided the destination of the points.
Andi Weimann lobbed the ball over the bar when through on goal and moments later, Ryan Hedges was penalised for handball. Edo Kayembe stepped up to score and condemned Rovers to defeat.
John Eustace rotated his squad after a quick turnaround with four changes. Callum Brittain, Danny Batth, Andi Weimann and Makhtar Gueye all came in with Tyrhys Dolan dropping to the bench for the first time this term.
It meant three starts in seven days for Ryan Hedges and Todd Cantwell, a sign of their ever-improving durability levels. Only Aynsley Pears, Dom Hyam, Lewis Travis and Sondre Tronstad have now started every league game this term.
After three below-par displays away from home, a good performance was as important as the result at Vicarage Road.
Rovers made a fast start and should've led inside the first 10 minutes. Only Hyam will know how he didn't score.
Lewis Travis' cross was palmed out by goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann and from six yards, Hyam smashed the ball off the underside of the bar and the ball then cannonned off the inside of the post and out. It's a genuine mystery as to how that didn't go in.
Watford then grew into the game and began to cause a few issues of their own. Festy Ebosele was causing issues down the right side whilst Giorgi Chakvetadze was popping up in pockets of space in front of the defence.
Their only real opening of the half came down the right through Ebosele. He crossed to the back post but Kwadwo Baah completely mistimed his finish and dragged the volley wide.
The first 15 minutes was a non-event with tired legs creeping in after a three-game week. But Rovers then fashioned another really good chance to score.
Cantwell lifted the ball over the defence for Weimann but the forward dinked it over the goalkeeper and crossbar, with a clear run at goal. A big opportunity spurned with half an hour to play.
That proved to be costly as with 20 minutes to play, Watford took the lead. Hedges was judged to have handled in the box and Kayembe stepped up to score the penalty.
The winger went to clear the ball but pulled out at risk of fouling his man and the ball his his hand above head height. In the modern day, it's hard to argue with the decision.
Despite a raft of changes to try and spark a response in the final 20 minutes, Rovers couldn't find a breakthrough. It was another tight game decided on very fine margins, as Watford took their chances whilst the visitors didn't.
The wait for an away win goes on to game seven. This was another frustrating afternoon on the road for Rovers.
