John Eustace believes Blackburn Rovers' mental strength will be tested at Watford as they seek a first away win of the season.

Rovers began the campaign with three draws on the road but back-to-back defeats in their last three-match week has put a different spin on their results away from Ewood Park.

The challenge is now to find a better balance between attack vs defence. That will not be easy against a Watford side that, like Rovers, have preferred playing in front of their own fans.

Rovers had plenty taken out of their legs on Wednesday night in a hard-fought draw with West Brom. They will now need to regroup and recover for a quick turnaround at Vicarage Road.

"When we're having difficult moments we are digging and getting through them," Eustace said.

"That is getting better every game now so it's important we get our rest because Watford is a tough place.

"I went to watch them at Leeds. They have a very experienced team, lots of pace and power in there. It will be a good test for us.

"There isn't a lot you can do between the games when it's Wednesday night and an early Saturday kick-off. We'll be travelling down on Friday but this is where the squad counts.

"That's why everyone has to be ready and you need a group of players ready to go in the Championship. It's relentless and we will be ready for the test."

Rovers will be without Hayden Carter at Watford though the exact extent of his knee injury is unknown. Eustace was hopeful that it is not as bad as some fans may have first feared when he was taken off.

Danny Batth will likely despise with Kyle McFadzean fit to return to the bench. The experienced defender had a hand operation which had a 10-day timescale but he is expected to travel down to Watford.

Eustace has been very happy with the showing from his side in the first 11 games. They took a much-fancied West Brom side all the way and the attributes they're showing consistently give the head coach confidence of a successful campaign.

“I think in the 11 games, there has been a hell of a lot to be pleased with," he reflected.

"Again, we were coming up against a top team at this level – fantastic experience, been together a long time and big name players on and off the pitch. In the Championship, you don’t get any tougher games than West Brom but I thought we held our own.

"Some of the group are learning about the league and we are holding our own against all the teams at the moment, that is really pleasing.

“We wanted to win the game, we expect to win every game. We set up to do that but you have to also respect the opposition.

"West Brom are a really good team, we went toe-to-toe with them and on another day we could have scored and won the game. But we take a point and now we move on.”
