Burnley striker Lyle Foster has withdrawn from the South Africa squad after picking up a knee injury.

Foster got on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win against Congo last Friday but was then stretchered off following a collision with the goalkeeper.

An official statement confirmed that the 24-year-old forward will play no part against the same opponent tomorrow.

It also revealed that Foster has had a scan on the injury and will now return to Burnley for his rehabilitation.

However, the national team’s official doctor, Dr Tshepo Molobi, says the injury is “not as severe as initially thought”.

“Fortunately, the nature of the injury does not require surgery,” he explained.

“However, time has to be afforded to him for proper rehabilitation and this is why he has been ruled out of the match on Tuesday.”

Foster has made nine appearances for the Clarets since the start of the campaign and got on the scoresheet in the East Lancashire derby at Turf Moor.

Burnley’s other attacking options include Jay Rodriguez and summer signing Andreas Hountondji, who arrived from French club Caen. Zian Flemming is also capable of leading the line.

Scott Parker’s side are back on the road this weekend with a trip to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

The Clarets currently sit third in the Championship table, having lost just one of their nine matches so far.

Burnley were held to a goalless draw against Preston North End before the break and have failed to score in two of their last three games.

Josh Cullen, Luca Koleosho, Connor Roberts, Maxime Esteve, James Trafford, Jeremy Sarmiento, Hountondji and Hannibal have also been away on international duty with their respective nations.
