Owen Beck was unable to play for Wales Under-21s against Czech Republic because of an “administrative error”.
Beck had initially been named in Craig Bellamy’s senior squad, but it was announced on Thursday night that the full-back would instead link up with the youngsters.
The Liverpool loanee was one of several key players unable to feature at Rodney Parade, along with Rubin Colwill.
Matty Jones’ side went on to suffer a 2-1 defeat, missing out on automatic qualification for next year’s European Championships.
Ahead of the game, Jones told Sgorgio: “There has been an administrative issue, an error, that occurred.
“It has been really unfortunate and there will be a review from the FAW going forward to rectify the issue and have a clear explanation.
“It is really unfortunate that we are missing these key players. My initial reaction is we have been used to missing them and been able to adapt.
“We have certainly got the strength within the squad to facilitate that. It wasn’t ideal and it has certainly been a test of my management skill, with regards to dealing with staff and players.”
The Welsh youngsters needed at least a point to be in with a chance of finishing top of the group. They are back in action on Tuesday night when they take on Slovakia.
Elsewhere, Balazs Toth was an unused substitute as Hungary drew 1-1 against the Netherlands in the Nations League.
Marco Rossi’s side, who currently sit third in their group, have another fixture against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday night.
Connor O’Riordan was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland Under-21s as they drew 1-1 against Norway.
A win would have secured a play-off spot for Jim Crawford’s side as they aim to reach the U21 Euros for the first time. They are back in action on Tuesday night against Italy.
Young goalkeeper Nick Michalski was named in an England Under-18 matchday squad for the first time but did not get any minutes on the pitch during their 2-0 defeat against Sweden.
The Young Lions have another match against either Ukraine or the Netherlands on Monday before the camp in Marbella ends.
It was a similar story for Yuki Ohashi on Thursday night. The Rovers attacker, who received a first call-up to the Japan squad, did not get an opportunity off the bench in the 2-0 victory against Saudi Arabia in World Cup qualifying.
Hajime Moriyasu's side host Australia Tuesday night, having taken maximum points from their three games so far.
Andi Weimann was also an unused substitute on Thursday night as Austria ran out 4-0 winners against Kazakhstan in the Nations League.
Ralf Rangnick’s side currently sit second in their group and take on leaders Norway on Sunday night.
