John Eustace believes Joe Rankin-Costello's versatility is an asset for Blackburn Rovers despite discussions about his best position.

The 24-year-old has been used in a variety of roles throughout his career. His best run of form came at right-back under Jon Dahl Tomasson, inverting from that position into midfield.

Eustace's full-backs have different roles and so he has played central midfield and a tucked-in wide-right role under the new head coach. Having started the season in the XI, he's been an unused substitute in the last three Championship games.

The Rovers head coach does not have a view on Rankin-Costello's 'best position' and insists his versatility is only a benefit to Rovers.

"I think he's just a very, good intelligent footballer," Eustace said when asked about Rankin-Costello's best position.

"Last year, he played central midfield for us. This year he's played off the right. His performances have been very effective. Joe is a really good player at this level and we're very fortunate to have him in the squad.

"It's a 46-game season and whoever is involved now is doing well. Joe started a lot of games early on, now he's out of the team for this short period.

"He will come back in the team at some point and there will be others who won't be playing. We have to use the squad and as long as everyone's fit, there will be competition for places.

"Everyone's main goal is for Blackburn Rovers not just for themselves."

Eustace is up against one of his former clubs on Saturday, having been assistant manager at Queens Park Rangers previously.

He believes they will provide a staunch test for Rovers but is confident his team can continue their fantastic start to the season, particularly at Ewood Park.

"It's a fantastic club. They're run very well. They have very good owners," he said on his time at Loftus Road.

"The CEO is good and they are run properly, they've recruited well in the last couple of seasons.

"It's a real family club and a great one to work for. They have a very good manager there with some good players and a togetherness.

"They can mix their football up, they can be direct if they want to be. They have a great target man in Frey who can hold it up and bring others into play.

"They have a good blend and they're coached very well. We know it will be a very difficult game on Saturday, a good team and we're looking forward to the challenge.

"I've said from day one, we need to be in every game we played, the Championship is relentless.

"Lots of teams that are coached very well. As long as we can play our football and impose ourselves, we have a good chance."
