Danny Batth believes Blackburn Rovers should be ambitious after getting a taste of life at Ewood Park.

The experienced defender came in for his first start of the Championship season, keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 win. There is plenty of competition for places and the return to fitness of Callum Brittain will give John Eustace an interesting dilemma.

Batth, who turns 34 today, has been around the level and knows what looks good at Championship level. Whilst he didn't give an exact answer, there was a steely look in his eyes when asked what the expectations should be after a great start.

The defender still has the same passion and hunger for clean sheets as on his first appearance. In his condition, there is no thoughts of winding down anytime soon.

"I think we're well set, it then depends on what you define as a good season," he said.

"I think that's individual. I'm not going to sit here and say where I think we should finish in the league but we have had a good start.

"We'll go into the next game to build on that. That's the case in the Championship because if you get too far ahead of yourself, there's a punch around the face around the corner.

"When you've played this many seasons, you know that no team goes unbeaten all season. We want to make sure that run goes on as long as possible."

"I didn't feel like it was easy the next day! It was good to be back out there," he added on his first Championship start.

"I am a bit older now and that gives you the experience to steer your way through the game when you might not be physically at your absolute peak.

"I am delighted to get that 90 minutes under my belt. I'm quite thankful for how I've looked after myself in my career with the view of playing as long as possible.

"I've never played in a way that needs me to be fast, I try to read the game and make good decisions that way.

"I'm ambitious, the clean sheet meant more to me than the three goals last weekend. I'm sure Yuki (Ohashi) was delighted with them!

"I was screaming in the last minutes when we were defending to make sure we kept the clean sheet. If we do that then we have a better chance of winning."

With a fully fit squad, Eustace will have some tough decisions to make for his matchday 20-man squad. For those on the periphery, their attitude can set the tone for the rest of the players.

"Training has been very good, a high standard," Batth said.

"There is 100% focus and buy-in. We all have the desire to do well and if you're not in the team, you have to be pushing the person who is wearing the jersey.

"It's what breeds competition within the group and a togetherness. I have been on both sides, it's difficult when you're not playing. When you have a group that you have a realistic chance of playing and there's an environment where everyone is giving everything to the cause, it makes life a lot easier.

"That's the situation we have here. We have to keep that going and those that are on the outside can come in on a moment's notice."
