John Eustace hopes Todd Cantwell will thrive at Blackburn Rovers and will be given every opportunity to succeed at Ewood Park.

The 26-year-old could make his debut this weekend though is unlikely to start but could be involved as a substitute.

The hope is that Cantwell will provide the magic required to win tight Championship matches and, in turn, help get his career back on track.

Rovers made a strong play to sign him and hope that he will be able to be the difference maker this season.

"Todd is a top-class player at this level, he's been at Rangers for the last few seasons and last year probably wasn't where he wants to be," Eustace said.

"We will give him the opportunity to showcase himself. He's a top player at this level and I know he's very determined to hit the heights he has in the past.

"He has lots of experience, he's been promoted three times out of the league so we're very excited that he's here.

"With the way we are playing, he can play in a number of positions across the front four. I think any of those suits him.

"He's a good lad who is coming into a group of really hard-working players. He'll help develop them and we can help him too. He has been there and done it and now we have to give him the environment to succeed."

Balazs Toth and Amario Cozier-Dubbery are two more hoping for debuts, albeit they are probably more likely to be waiting in the wings on Saturday.

The Hungarian goalkeeper has had minimal time with his new team-mates after being called up to the national team. But he will provide senior competition in goal for Aynsley Pears.

Eustace is pleased with the overall balance of his squad and the competition in each area.

"He's a good goalkeeper, we wouldn't have signed him if he wasn't," he said on Toth.

"He can build up from the back if we want to do that. He can stop goals from going in, what more do you want from a goalkeeper?

"We have signed a goalkeeper who can do what we want and we're happy he is here.

"I think there are still areas we need to improve on and we want more competition in those areas.

"Overall, I am happy. Everything is fine. We have good characters in the dressing room and they will bring the best out of the other players.

"We used 15, 16 players last year and we're already using more now. They will play a very important role, just because you're not starting a game doesn't mean you are not important to the group.

"That's what having a squad is all about. When you play, you want to keep the shirt. When you don't, you want to play and hope nobody excels and keeps you out of the team. We need competition for places and that's what we want at the football club.

"The players coming in have made positive starts. Everyone is pulling in the right direction and that's the environment we want to build here."
