Former Stanley man Andy Mangan’s shock move to Real Madrid is reportedly off after his work permit was rejected.
Mangan had been set to join the coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabeu, having worked alongside Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide, while obtaining his coaching badges.
The 38-year-old made more than 300 appearances during his playing career, including a couple of stints with the Reds. He also had spells with Fleetwood, Tranmere and Wrexham among others.
He is currently working as an assistant coach at Stockport as the Hatters aim to build on last season’s promotion from League Two.
Mangan began his coaching career at Fleetwood in 2019 before heading to Bristol Rovers a couple of years later to continue working with Joey Barton.
The former striker had a brief spell as caretaker manager at the Memorial Stadium before heading to Stockport, where he has helped the Hatters make a strong start to life in the third tier.
Dave Challinor’s side have taken 10 out of a possible 12 points so far, including wins against Cambridge, Blackpool and Bristol Rovers.
Ancelotti had reportedly been looking to freshen up the coaching set-up at Madrid three years on from his return to the club.
The Spanish giants finished top of La Liga last season, with a 10-point cushion above second-place Barcelona.
They also lifted the Champions League following a 2-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley.
Ancelotti’s men, who have taken eight points from their opening four La Liga fixtures this term, are back in action next weekend when they head to Real Sociedad.
