Rovers left Burnley with a point despite finishing with 10 men following a fierce East Lancashire derby at Turf Moor.
Lyle Foster had given the Clarets an early lead but it was cancelled out by an Andi Weimann stunner.
John Eustace’s side went down to 10 in the second half when Makhtar Gueye was shown a second yellow card for protesting to referee Tony Harrington.
Rovers made three changes from the win against Oxford, with Owen Beck coming straight into the starting line-up following his loan switch from Liverpool.
Weimann and Gueye also came into the side, with Harry Pickering and Danny Batth both missing out.
Burnley made five changes from their defeat at Sunderland, with new signings Joe Worrall, Josh Laurent, Hannibal and Jaidon Anthony all starting.
Luca Koleosho also returned after missing the trip to the Stadium of Light, while Jeremy Sarmiento was on the bench following his loan switch from Bright on deadline day.
There was an electric atmosphere when the players stepped over the white line as the fierce rivals prepared to lock horns for the first time in over a year.
Rovers nearly had a dream start when James Trafford’s scuffed clearance dropped to Weimann, who very nearly caught the goalkeeper off his line but his strike flew just over the bar.
The hosts’ first chance fell to Lucas Pires, who scuffed an effort wide from the edge of the box after a slick passing move.
Foster put Burnley in front after a well-worked move down the left wing. Josh Brownhill released Anthony with a clever flick and his cross found the South African, who made no mistake with his header.
The Clarets were in control for the next 10 minutes but Rovers got back on level terms through Weimann’s moment of magic. The ball sat up nicely for the experienced forward and he found the top corner with a superb strike from 25 yards.
Hannibal had a go from distance as Burnley looked to immediately regain the lead but his curling effort was held by Pears.
Tyrhys Dolan had the ball in the net moments later after latching onto Lewis Travis’ pass and providing a composed finish past Trafford, but the offside flag came the Clarets’ rescue.
Foster nearly doubled his tally for the afternoon but could only glance a header wide after Worrall rose highest at the back post and nodded the ball back into a dangerous area.
The forward continued to cause problems and thought he had Pears beaten with another headed, but the ball cannoned back off the foot of the post.
Koleosho, constantly looking to drive at his man, cut inside from the right and flashed an effort well wide on the stroke of half time.
The frantic nature continued after the break as Worrall’s clearance fell to Callum Brittain who flashed an effort wide of the near post.
Rovers then caught Burnley on the break as Gueye slipped in Dolan, who forced Trafford into a smart stop from an angle.
After a positive start to the second half, Eustace’s side men dealt a major blow when Gueye was given his marching orders.
Brownhill tried his luck from distance as Burnley tried to make the most of their man advantage, but Pears was happy to watch it wide.
The hosts continued to see plenty of the ball but struggled to carve out opportunities. Debutant Lewis Baker had a chance at the other end but Trafford saved low to his left.
There were a few hearts in mouths when Manuel Benson cut onto his left foot and tried to bend one into the top corner but his strike flew wide on this occasion.
Benson had another chance in stoppage time with a free kick from the edge of the box but the Belgian could not keep his shot down.
Travis had a chance to win it at the death after Rovers won back possession high up the pitch, but the skipper fired just wide.
