John Buckley hailed the togetherness in the Rovers camp after a positive start to the new campaign.

Buckley came off the bench for the final 10 minutes at Norwich City as the side fought back to claim a good point on the road.

“Obviously, the last 10 minutes we were trying to get a goal back, which we did, so we are happy with a point really,” Buckley told the club channels. “But when we had control of the game at half time, it is disappointing to concede two goals.

“We need to have more composure and control the game a bit better, but good spirit in the last 10 or 15 minutes. It was a great finish by Yuki (Ohashi) and a great ball from Cal (Brittain).

“I thought the first half was really good, we managed the game well with how we defended. There were a couple of mistakes but we are going to improve on things like that, it is only the second game of the season.

“It has not been a bad start - a couple of wins, here and in the cup against Derby. (Norwich) are a very good team, especially going forward.

“We knew we would create chances so it was just about sticking in (the game). Yuki made half a chance into a really good one to be fair.

“We have got a good group, there is a lot of togetherness. We can dig in when we need to and luckily we found a goal at the end.”

That togetherness was evident as the team fought back at Carrow Road after goals from Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz had turned the contest on its head.

"(John Eustace) is massive on being together as a team – the coaching staff and whole squad,” Buckley continued. “I came on and was trying to impact the game.

“Everyone is working hard in training with a great intensity as you saw from the Stockport – we made a lot of changes but it was professional. I am glad we got a result at the end.”

The 24-year-old midfielder also started the convincing win at Edgeley Park last week and is determined to make the most of his opportunities in the early stages of the season as he aims to nail down a place in Eustace’s side.

“I wanted to put my stamp on the game and try to create something,” the Academy graduate explained.

“If I can get it on the half turn and make things happen, I have always said I know I have got that (in my locker). When I got on, I am glad I showed it.

“I can (play higher up the pitch) but against Stockport I controlled the game really well, it was probably my best game in a while.

“I just have to keep training well and when I am starting, make sure that I stay in the team.”

Attention now turns to Saturday’s clash with newly-promoted Oxford United, who were beaten 3-2 at Coventry City last weekend after a 96th minute winner from Haji Wright.

Buckley believes there have been plenty of positives to take from Rovers’ first few games and is eager to kick on.

“I think it was a really good pre-season for the six or seven weeks we were in,” he said.

“There was a lot of fitness and things the gaffer was trying to implement, and I think it is coming out in the first few games. Hopefully, we can continue that.”
