Blackburn Rovers have confirmed the sale of Sam Smzodics, who has joined Ipswich Town in a permanent deal.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands the fee is in the region of £9million, with add-ons likely to ensure Rovers receive eight figures for their star player.

A deal between the two clubs was struck on Thursday, with Szmodics travelling down to Suffolk to complete the move. He could make his Premier League debut on Saturday against Liverpool after beating the 12pm deadline.

Rovers did everything in their power to keep Szmodics at the club but equally did not want to stand in his way of moving to the Premier League if their valuation was met. It's understood that a new bumper contract was on the table for the star forward if he opted to remain at Ewood Park.

Rovers will now look to reinvest in their squad before the transfer window closes, with two weeks remaining. A goalkeeper, full-back, midfielder and attacker remain their top priorities.

It's understood that the club are unlikely to splash out on a big, marquee signing, but instead try to bolster the squad as a collective. John Eustace has been very clear about the areas of the squad he would like to be improved before the window shuts.

The influx of funds could also make Rovers more competitive in the loan market, whether that's paying a loan fee or a larger contribution towards the wages of a premium Premier League talent.

Permanent additions are the main focus, though. Rovers will be active before the transfer window closes after making four new additions to Eustace's squad so far.

On the move, Szmodics said:  “I am delighted to be here as an Ipswich Town player.

“There’s always been interest since I was a kid, but it just felt right this time with the challenge of the Premier League.

“After speaking to a couple of the lads, including Lewis Travis who was here last season, they just pushed me and said that I need to come and work under this manager, which is something I can’t wait to do.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Premier League and I’ve always said to my friends, family and agents that I’ll get to the top one day.

“There’s nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town. I am over the moon to be here and looking forward to the season ahead.”
