Blackburn Rovers have agreed a fee with Ipswich Town for star attacker Sam Szmodics, The Lancashire Telegraph understands.

The 28-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation over the summer but the ongoing saga is now coming to an end.

Szmodics will travel down to Suffolk for a medical with a formal announcement likely to follow on Friday. John Eustace said earlier on Thursday he expected their star man to play at Norwich City but the situation has since developed.

It's a bitter blow for the club and Eustace, though an exit always felt inevitable once serious Premier League interest emerged.

Rovers have dug their heels in over negotiations, sticking to their valuation which was understood to be around the £10million mark for last season's Championship Golden Boot winner.

Ipswich have now returned and upped their offer, paving the way for Szmodics to make his move. He will go with the best wishes of Rovers fans after saving them from relegation and handling the scrutiny impeccably over the summer.

Szmodics made it clear that he would like to leave if the opportunity arose to make a move to the top-flight. However, when the deal didn't materialise, he knuckled down and was reintegrated into the squad, scoring three goals in the last week for Rovers.

That strike at Ewood Park proved to be his last league goal and was a fitting way for him to sign off. Szmodics looked visbly moved saluting the Blackburn End at full-time.

Rovers have two weeks to source his replacement. Eustace already wanted four additions; a goalkeeper, full-back, midfielder and winger. That will now surely increase after losing their star player.
