Scott Parker is excited to experience his first home game as Burnley boss – but isn’t getting carried away after a dream start at Luton.

The trip to Kenilworth Road couldn’t have gone much better, with the Clarets securing an impressive 4-1 victory against another side who were in the Premier League last season.

Spirits will be high when Cardiff come to town this weekend, but Parker is staying focused on the long-term picture as he targets another positive display.

“I am really excited,” he told a press conference. “Obviously, it is our first home game and there is plenty to look forward to in that sense.

“We are coming off a good week as well, a good result and all-round performance. I am pleased to finally get in front of our home supporters, in pre-season we haven’t had the opportunity to do that as much.”

The Burnley boss continued: “It was a positive result and performance, but I have been here many times before and it is a marathon of a season.

“One result, while it was very pleasing, there is still a long way to go and lots of things we need to improve on to slowly get better at certain things.

“I am sure there is big optimism and that is how it should be, to be honest. The group have been first class.

“A football club is always a better place to come into after a win and we have certainly seen that building up to the Cardiff game this weekend.”

Parker witnessed the atmosphere at Turf Moor first-hand during his playing career and insists the supporters can play a massive role this season.

“It is one of the most important things. It is a cliché that the fans can be the 12th man but there is no truer saying,” he said.

“I felt exactly the same (as a player). I have been in the stadium before so I have a rough understanding, but it was the first time on Monday night where it really hit home.

“There was a real positive energy. Of course, we won the game and scored four goals but generally, the support and togetherness I felt – from the goal celebrations and everything else – was a real pleasing factor and will be vitally important this year.”

Cardiff will be keen to bounce back from their defeat against Sunderland on the opening day and Parker says the Clarets must be ready for a “reaction”.

“They are a good side, they will bring us different problems than Luton on Monday night,” the boss explained.

“They have some experience in their team and a new coach. They lost their first game so will come with a reaction, for sure.

“We need to (kick on) from Monday night, put in a strong performance and hopefully come away with three points.”

Sander Berge missed the Luton trip with a quad injury. The midfielder could be back on the grass before Saturday’s fixture but will not be ready to make the squad.
