Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that Dilan Markanday has joined Chesterfield on loan for the 2024/25 season.

John Eustace revealed that the 22-year-old winger missed Tuesday night's 6-1 win over Stockport County due to talks with another club. The Lancashire Telegraph revealed on Wednesday that was League Two new-boys Chesterfield.

The Spireites are amongst the favourites for promotion in the fourth tier after winning the National League at a canter last term. Paul Cook's side are heavily fancied and Markanday will bolster an already strong squad.

Markanday's Rovers career is yet to really catch fire and after two and a half years of being in and out of the side, he now has the chance to continue his development with regular football.

The winger's contract expires in 2025 but the club have a one-year option to extend it. He follows the likes of Jake Garrett, Pat Gamble and Connor O'Riordan is heading on loan in the last few weeks.

“I’m really excited; I can’t wait to get going in front of the fans," Markanday told the club website after signing.

“I’ve met all of the boys – they’re all top. It’s a really exciting time at the club and I can’t’ wait.”

On the move, Eustace added: "When he went to Aberdeen, there was a change of manager or something happened so he didn't get his run of games.

"It's important it's the right club to further his development. I think you can see he's a very talented player, he has huge ability and he has to go away and prove he can come back and challenge for a spot at Blackburn. I rate Dilan very highly, he just needs a good run of games to fulfil his potential."

Eustace has not ruled out more players on the fringes leaving before the window ends. Leo Duru and Jake Batty could be loaned if suitable full-back cover arrives first whilst Jack Vale could possibly move out depending on how the final weeks of the window go.
