Blackburn Rovers fans would've been forgiven for a bit of pessimism coming into this season after the events of the last 12 months.

With no new faces until August, John Eustace's side were a little undercooked, by the head coach's own admission, ahead of opening day.

Yet, what has been served up has been close to a beautifully seared rare steak (now I'm hungry), with optimism levels given a massive shot in the arm.

Rovers have scored 10 goals in two matches, shared the goals around and the fans have already got some new cult heroes. I know it's early in the season, and you have to caveat the opposition, but the away end at Edgeley Park was particularly exuberant on Tuesday night.

If we're looking at this purely analytically, Rovers haven't had bad games to start the season. Opening night, under the lights at home, against a newly-promoted team tipped to struggle by many. That was followed by a very understrengthened League One opponent in the cup.

But the way Rovers have dispatched their rivals has been very impressive. The goals they have scored haven't been tap-ins or set-pieces but brilliantly constructed team moves.

Eustace has used the squad perfectly and the return of Sam Szmodics has created a siege mentality on the pitch, in the dug out and in the terraces.

'One more year, one more year, Sammie Szmodics' was the rallying cry for their star forward, who netted two more goals on Tuesday. He got the final acclaim and his performances merited it. There is a very public transfer saga playing out at Saturday's opponents, Norwich City, which is a great example of how some players respond when being courted.

Szmodics has been clear that he would like to move to the Premier League and at this stage of his career, he'd be forgiven for wondering if it's his only shot. But there has been no sulking or moaning. His body language on the pitch has been impeccable. That's why, if he does leave, Rovers fans will send him off with their blessing.

What also helps is the early signs of their new additions. The Japanese flags are already aloft in the away end for Yuki Ohashi. Makhtar Gueye was orchestrating the post-match celebrations like a seasoned Rovers stalwart. They are fitting in just nicely.

It's very early in the day to make any sweeping conclusions but both look like very shrewd additions, at around £1.2million combined. The signs are promising that they will be able to contribute more than Sam Gallagher and Semir Telalovic, whilst the club still made a net profit.

Andi Weimann, looks like he's got plenty left in the tank too. He remains a composed finisher and a willing runner. Whether it's off the right side or in the pocket, he will be a very useful player for Rovers.

These early wins and the relative frustrations in the transfer window have been a big boost for Eustace too. If the jury was still out despite last season's survival act, supporters are now beginning to fully buy-in.

His comments about recruitment and the state of the squad have come across as ambitious and authentic. He hasn't taken the nuclear grenade option that Jon Dahl Tomasson often opted for but he has equally avoided any suggestion he is a 'yes man'.

Look, everything feels better when you win football matches, doesn't it? Football is a fickle sport. But as first weeks of a new season go, this has been pretty damn good. Sort out the set pieces and it's been as close to perfect as can be expected.

Can you imagine how good it would feel if Szmodics stayed? As the weeks go by and the goals keep flying in, Rovers fans will grow more confident that it could be a reality. That seemed out of the question three weeks ago.

Ultimately, Ipswich know the valuation and the ball is in their court. I wouldn't rule anything out until 11:01, August 30.
