Dom Hyam has a one-year option in his Blackburn Rovers contract, The Lancashire Telegraph can reveal.

The 28-year-old joined Rovers in August 2022 and in 13 days, will mark two years at Ewood Park. The club announced that Hyam had joined from Coventry City on a three-year deal until 2025.

That had led supporters to believe that the experienced defender was out of contract with the club this summer. However, The LT understands that an option to extend his stay by 12 months is included in his contract.

Rovers quite commonly add themselves some assurance by including one-year extensions that they can trigger. However, they are usually disclosed at the time of the signing.

It therefore gives Rovers and Hyam longer to thrash out a longer-term agreement, should both parties wish to, with the knowledge they can extend his stay until 2026.

Rovers held contract talks with Hyam in the new year, however, they were put on the backburner with the club suddenly thrust into a relegation dogfight.

It was a turbulent time for Rovers, with the January window ending sourly, a change of management and then desperately trying to avoid relegation. As a result, negotiations were understandably paused.

The club are unlikely to press ahead with any contract renewals until the summer transfer window closes. Full attention is on adding to John Eustace's squad, with the head coach keen for four more additions, before considering any potential exits.

Rovers have several players in the same situation as Hyam, where they're out of contract in 2025 but the club have one-year options. That's the case for Ryan Hedges and Zak Gilsenan.

The same applies to Dilan Markanday, who is in talks to join League Two side Chesterfield on loan. Jack Vale is another in that same boat and it'll be interesting to see if he follows Markanday out the door before the transfer window closes.

There are six senior players who will have to sign new deals to remain at Ewood Park beyond the end of the summer. Arnor Sigurdsson, Tyrhys Dolan and Joe Hilton then summer additions, Danny Batth, Kyle McFadzean and Andi Weimann, who all joined on one-year deals.
