Blackburn Rovers have sanctioned a loan move for Connor O'Riordan, who has joined Cambridge United on loan for the season.

The young defender signed from Crewe Alexandra in January but was limited to just two substitute appearances. He featured regularly in pre-season for John Eustace but after the signings of Danny Batth and Kyle McFadzean, the club have decided regular football is best for his development.

The 20-year-old admitted last season was a learning curve but was frustrated at a lack of opportunity. A move to League One has therefore been agreed and he could make his Cambridge debut tomorrow night in the Carabao Cup.

“I am really excited to be here,” O’Riordan said after signing for Cambridge.

“I just want to help the Club as much as I can and help myself personally by playing as many games as I can.

“The way the gaffer wants to play football will suit my strengths and we both thought it would be a good fit. I have had a full pre-season so I am ready to go whenever I am needed - I am just excited to get going now.”

Manager Garry Monk added, “Connor is a very talented young defender and we are really happy to have secured his services.

“He adds another dimension to our defensive options and will provide fantastic competition to the squad. I am looking forward to working with him this season and seeing him make an impact on the team.”

Rovers are keen to send more of their youngsters out on loan. Pat Gamble joined Flyde over the weekend and more temporary exits are in the pipeline as and when Rovers bolster their options
