Andi Weimann has stressed the importance of a quick start for Blackburn Rovers after opening their account against Derby County.

The Rovers debutant scored the decisive goal to put the hosts back ahead, moments after the Rams had equalised. Weimann, as part of a triple change, had only been on the pitch for a matter of seconds before Rovers were pegged back.

But his first goal for the club was the first of three in 12 frantic minutes. That took the game from Derby and set Rovers up for three points.

"It didn't start that great because I came on and then they scored five seconds later," Weimann joked.

"Two minutes later, brilliant from Hayden (Carter), stood it up for me. It seemed to take an age to come to me. It felt so slow, I could see them running across and trying to defend it.

"I just wanted to hit the target and I knew I'd score. I was confident but it just felt like it took so long to come to me. It was my first touch so it couldn't have been any better, I will always back myself to score goals if I get in those positions.

"It's a new start, a new season and there's no better way to send the fans home form. Four goals, three points. It's the start we wanted and we want to build momentum to move forward."

It was an encouraging start for Rovers, who have now won each of their four opening-day matches.

Weimann believes the performance was one which can be built on and stressed the importance of building momentum.

"I've been here now for two weeks and you saw exactly what we've been working on," he said.

"What we've been working on has paid off and I think it was a great start.

"I think you can tell it's a very close group, before the new signings came in it was a small team. The gaffer has always said it's our family and we try to stick together.

"It's very important to start well, the lads have been working very hard and this is what it's about. It's never easy to win games in the Championship, you have to earn every win. We showed great character and defended well.

"I think you've seen we came out and played how the manager wanted to. We all enjoyed it, it's a start, people are getting up to speed but I think we can keep improving."
