“Tough decisions” could need to be made at a near-150-year-old swimming club if its financial situation does not improve.
Blackburn Centurions was founded in 1878 and has been the leading competitive swimming club in Blackburn with Darwen during that time.
Like many swimming clubs across the country now, it is facing significant financial pressure due to the cost of hiring facilities and limited income.
There are only two public swimming baths in Blackburn with Darwen borough, each town's leisure centre, following the closure of Daisyfield baths.
Club chair Ruth Johnson said the club’s cash reserves have “depleted.”

She said: “Post-Covid, the club tried to keep the fees affordable in order to encourage people to participate and make sure it was accessible to as many swimmers as possible.
“Like many other clubs around the country, the cost of pool hire is a huge financial challenge at approximately £60,000 a year.
“Come November, some really tough decisions will need to be made around the viability of the club if nothing changes and things stay as they are now.”
The club has launched a fundraising page to try and raise £10,000 which, if achieved, Ruth says will help keep the club afloat for around another 12 months.
She added: “As a committee, we will be driving to look at fundraising initiatives.
"We’re also seeking sponsorships from local businesses and organisations.”
A description on the fundraising page said: “Our club isn’t just about swimming. It’s about building confidence, teamwork, and lifelong friendships.
“We provide a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment for swimmers of all ages and abilities, ensuring they develop their skills and pursue their dreams.

“However, maintaining and growing a volunteer-driven club comes with significant costs, the main one being pool hire.
“Unfortunately, we are now facing a financial shortfall that threatens the future of our beloved club.”
The club says every penny raised through the page will go directly into supporting the club and its swimmers.
