John Eustace has confirmed that Blackburn Rovers have missed out on the signing of Jeffrey de Lange and are no closer to bringing in a new goalkeeper.

Leopold Wahlstedt left Rovers more than one month ago but the club have been unsuccessful in attempts to sign senior competition for Aynsley Pears.

De Lange was someone who had been identified as a target but he is now joining French club Marseille. The Dutch goalkeeper will be their number two after a deal was struck with his parent club, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.

It leaves Rovers back at the drawing board in terms of shot-stoppers.

"No, not at the moment," Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph when asked if a goalkeeper was any closer to arriving.

"He is someone that's been on the list but I believe he's left now and he's going to Marseille. So that's out of the window!

"I am asked my opinion on things. I'll give that and we take it from there."

Eustace was crystal clear that Rovers still need four or five more additions to bulk out but also improve the quality of his squad.

Goalkeeper, full-back and midfield have been identified as obvious positions where Rovers simply lack depth. Eustace also wants to add to his forward line with a couple of attackers who can play across the front.

"We'll have to wait and see, everyone is trying their hardest to bring players in," he said on the likelihood of new recruits arriving soon.

"We want to sign players that will make us better and not just bolster the squad. It's important that we bring the right players in that will really make the other players have to be competitive to keep their slots, their positions.

"Every player we bring in has to improve this group. We don't want to sign people for the sake of it. That's why we're biding our time to make sure it's the right ones.

"I want players that will make every position competitive. I don't want anyone to be guaranteed a start.

"It's important that in games, after 60 minutes, I can look at the bench and think 'They'll change the game for us'. It's something we probably didn't have last season.

"Every player that we bring in, we want to make this squad better. You can see we haven't got any cover in full-back areas.

"You can see we only have John Buckley as cover in midfield. One goalkeeper who is ready to play. We still need cover in a lot of really, really important areas."
