John Eustace feels Blackburn Rovers are ready for the new Championship season but is drawing no conclusions from pre-season.

Rovers rounded off their pre-season with their best performance of the off-season, beating Stockport County 1-0 at Edgeley Park.

Although it was a slender margin of victory, Rovers could and should have made the deficit far greater. They spurned great opportunities but limited the opposition to very few chances.

The main thing for Eustace in pre-season is fitness. Whilst he was encouraged by Rovers display, he was keen to stress that pre-season results mean very little.

"I think as long as the lads got their fitness in, that's the most important thing," Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph.

"It was a big 90 minutes for a lot of them, a big 90 minutes for Ty (Dolan). He put in a really good shift tonight, as he does every week, and he got his goal.

"His attitude since he’s come back for pre-season has been exceptional and it’s a big season for Ty. I hope he scores a lot of goals because his work rate deserves more goals for how hard he works for the team.

"It was great to see the new lads as well to get 45 minutes each. It’s pleasing for them to get the chance to adapt to how we play in English football, coming here on a Friday night and have a really good game to play in.

"Siggy got 45 minutes, Hedgey got 45 minutes so that is the most important thing tonight that we got minutes in the legs.

"I'm very pleased to come through pre-season with no injuries now. The most important thing is taking each game as it comes.

"We want to keep growing and getting better. The performances have been better and better. But again, it was most important to come through unscathed with no injuries.

“Stockport are a really good team and it’s going to be a really difficult game when we come here in the cup.

“It was a good performance and pre-season’s about understanding each other and how we want to play with and without the ball. I think we’ve certainly got better at that with every game we’ve played.

"It's about fitness. Pre-season means nothing at all. People can get high or low about it but the most important thing is to have a fully fit squad ready to go for the Championship."

Rovers fans got their first sight of Makhtar Gueye and Yuki Ohashi in their colours. Gueye started the game and was involved in the thick of the action throughout.

His hold-up play caught the eye and he was in the right positions in front of goal, even if he'll be disappointed not to have got on the score sheet.

Likewise, Ohashi looked bright in the second half and got 45 minutes under his belt. Eustace in excited to work with the pair and get a real flavour for what they're about.

"He's a big unit, I know the club have worked really hard with the recruitment side of it to get those two boys in," he said on Gueye.

"They will add good competition for places. I think his performances tonight showed he's a physical presence, he looked after the ball fairly well.

"There will be a lot more to come but the recruitment team have worked hard to get those two players in and that's pleasing."

He added: "I haven't seen them train yet, they did little bits yesterday but it's the first time I've seen them perform.

"I'm looking forward to working with them over the next four, five weeks to see what they're about and really get a look at them."
