John Eustace has revealed Arnor Sigurdsson and Georgie Gent both missed Blackburn Rovers' friendlies due to injury.

The Icelandic forward was expected to start at Wigan Athletic on Saturday, only to pick up a groin issue in training on Friday.

Gent, similarly, was due to feature last weekend but a kick on his shin ruled him out as well. It meant a last-minute reshuffle for Rovers with Tom Bloxham coming into the side despite playing 45 minutes on Friday night.

Sam Gallagher and Sam Szmodics were unavailable due to transfer interest elsewhere, leaving the squad looking particularly light on Saturday.

Tyrhys Dolan came off after receiving a whack but Eustace confirmed he was fine after the match.

"Siggy is injured, he got injured in training on Friday so we'll have to assess that," Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph.

"He has a groin strain, I don't know how serious it is. Georgie has shin splints, he got a kick on his shin on Friday too so he couldn't play either.

“The most important thing was that we came through the two games without any injuries.

“You can see the squad’s quite thin, so if any of our senior players do come off the pitch it is a worry.

“The most important thing is everyone is ok. Ty’s (Dolan) fine now, coming off. He just took a kick on the shin, so overall a really productive two days.”

It's worse news for Harry Leonard and Zak Gilsenan, though, who will both miss the start of the season with more serious injuries.

Leonard has been particularly unlucky. He suffered a fractured back which ruled him out for three months last season.

He returned to the Senior Training Centre early this summer, hoping to make an impression, but dislocated his shoulder in training.

Similarly, Gilsenan has struggled with fitness issues. He returned to training but suffered a setback which will now see him on the sidelines for  a considerable period.

"Harry is seven or eight weeks away and Zak will be a couple of months, unfortunately," Eustace explained.

"Harry has dislocated his shoulder and Zak has got a muscle injury."
