Rovers have reopened talks with Kyle McFadzean to remain at Ewood Park next season, The Lancashire Telegraph understands.

The experienced defender spent the second half of last term in East Lancashire after arriving from Coventry on a short-term deal, making 12 appearances as John Eustace’s men secured safety.

Rovers stated in their retained list earlier this summer the club was in talks over McFadzean’s future but there has been no official update since then.

The Lancashire Telegraph reported a couple of weeks ago that Rovers ran the risk of losing out on the 37-year-old, who had become a free agent.

Reports emerged on Friday morning that talks had resumed over a new deal and we have been able to confirm that is the case.

Talks are set to continue over the weekend and an announcement could be made early next week if all goes to plan.

Dom Hyam and Hayden Carter are the only current members of the squad with Championship experience while Scott Wharton is sidelined by injury. Connor O’Riordan and Pat Gamble have also featured in pre-season.

Rovers have also held talks with Danny Batth, who is a free agent following his departure from Norwich at the end of last season.

The club has a long-standing interest in the experienced defender, who nearly made the move to East Lancashire last summer before problems off the pitch saw the deal fall through.

Liam Cooper was another target to bolster Rovers’ defensive ranks but wages and contract length proved to be a stumbling block.

At the back end of last season, Eustace revealed he would like to keep McFadzean around at Ewood Park if possible.

"I think Kyle's leadership qualities are there for everyone to see," the head coach said in April.

"He has been outstanding since I have been at the football club, he came in straight away and made a big difference. Then we changed our shape and he had to be patient.

"He came on against Leeds and was terrific again, people like that are worth their weight in gold. The experience, know-how and little chats in the dressing room, on the training pitch.

"It's stuff managers and coaches can't say or do. He has made a huge difference and improved the defence just by being around the group.

"Kyle has been fantastic, we have spoken about having more quality and experienced players around the group to help and develop. He is one I would like to keep for sure, if we're allowed to do that."
