Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing forward Stephen Humphrys on a free transfer, The Lancashire Telegraph can exclusively reveal.

The 26-year-old is unattached after leaving Wigan Athletic at the end of his contract last season. The Latics made a play to keep the versatile attacker but he rejected the deal due to finances.

Rovers are have registered their interest in Humphrys, though it's unclear whether they have gone as far as making a formal contract offer at this stage.

The club have stepped up their recruitment drive this week with the club now focusing on clear targets to bolster Eustace's first-team squad.

Humphrys has offers from several clubs and is weighing up his options. He's expected to make a decision soon, with the new season only a fortnight away.

John Eustace has reiterated his desire to add more goal-scorers to Rovers' ranks this summer. Yuki Ohashi is expected to join from Sanfreece Hiroshima as their first summer signing in a low-cost deal.

Humphrys fits the profile for Rovers in terms of finances and availability. It's now down to them how hard they want to push for an agreement amid other competition.

The forward scored nine goals in League One last season, registering four assists. He's left-footed, versatile and comfortable playing across the front line.

After leaving Wigan in May, he wrote on social media: "It’s with a heavy heart that my time at Wigan has come to an end.

"After speaking with the manager, and learning of the new structure and cutbacks the club will be taking under the new ownership, unfortunately, the club and I couldn’t come to an agreement on my contract for me to stay.

"I would have loved to be a part of this great club for longer but this is a short career and you have to decide what’s best for yourself and your family in the long term.

"I have made friends for life at this club, made amazing memories and received support from the fans that I will appreciate forever. Thank you so much for everything. I wish the club nothing but the best in the future."
