Blackburn Rovers have rejected a bid from Ipswich Town for Sam Szmodics, The Lancashire Telegraph can confirm.

Reports on Monday morning claimed an offer from the Premier League newboys had been lodged and it's understood that is accurate.

Rovers had fielded interest for Szmodics this summer but without a formal bid being made. Ipswich have now tested the water with the first offer of the window for the 28-year-old.

However, their offer is well below Blackburn's valuation of the players and has therefore been dismissed. Rovers have Szmodics tied down up until 2027, if they so wish, and therefore can command a decent fee.

There was discussions about a £6million offer last week, which, at the time, was wide of the mark. Since then, an actual proposal has been made by Kieran McKenna's side.

Rovers have not formally put a price tag on Szmodics' head, however, it's clear they would not do business on numbers around that figure. John Eustace is keen to retain his services and if a move doesn't materialise, a new deal hasn't been ruled out.

Szmodics himself has been clear that he would like to move to the Premier League if an acceptable offer was made. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to this bid being knocked back.

The 28-year-old missed Saturday's friendlies against FC Nurnberg 'as a precaution'. Rovers' players have been given Monday off after spending a week away but will return to training on Tuesday in the build-up to the weekend's games against Morecambe and Wigan Athletic.

Rovers' stance is that they wouldn't stand in Szmodics' way if a life-changing offer was made to the players, whether that be to play at a higher level or financially, providing their valuation is met.

This first bid from Ipswich hasn't met that threshold. Only time will tell if they will return with another bid.

Steve Waggott will be in attendance at the club's pre-schedule fans' forum this evening where he will no doubt be pressed for an update on Szmodics, transfer activity and other pressing matters.
